How to Calculate CBM for Shipping

CBM means cubic meter. In international shipping, CBM is used to measure cargo volume. Freight forwarders, importers and exporters use CBM to estimate how much space a shipment will take in a container, truck, warehouse or aircraft.

If you ship cartons, pallets, machinery, fresh produce, textiles or general cargo, CBM helps you answer three practical questions:

  • How much space does my cargo need?
  • Can my cargo fit in a 20GP, 40GP or 40HQ container?
  • What is the estimated freight cost per CBM, per ton or per shipment?

You can calculate it manually with a simple formula, or use the FreightCostCalc CBM Calculator to do it faster.

CBM Formula

The basic CBM formula is:

CBM = Length x Width x Height x Quantity

The key is to make sure all dimensions use meters.

If your carton dimensions are already in meters:

CBM = Length (m) x Width (m) x Height (m) x Quantity

Example:

A carton is 0.50 m long, 0.40 m wide and 0.30 m high. You have 100 cartons.

0.50 x 0.40 x 0.30 x 100 = 6 CBM

Your total shipment volume is 6 cubic meters.

How to Calculate CBM from Centimeters

Many suppliers provide carton dimensions in centimeters. In that case, divide the result by 1,000,000.

CBM = Length (cm) x Width (cm) x Height (cm) x Quantity / 1,000,000

Example:

A carton is 50 cm x 40 cm x 30 cm. You have 100 cartons.

50 x 40 x 30 x 100 / 1,000,000 = 6 CBM

This is the same result as the meter calculation.

How to Calculate CBM from Inches

If your dimensions are in inches, convert inches to meters first, or use this formula:

CBM = Length (in) x Width (in) x Height (in) x Quantity / 61,023.744

Example:

A carton is 20 in x 16 in x 12 in. You have 100 cartons.

20 x 16 x 12 x 100 / 61,023.744 = 6.29 CBM

CBM and Container Loading

CBM is important because every container has a practical usable volume. The exact loading capacity depends on carton shape, pallet use, cargo weight, airflow and loading method, but common planning numbers are:

Container TypeApproximate Usable CBM
20GP25 to 28 CBM
40GP55 to 58 CBM
40HQ65 to 68 CBM
20RF reeferLower than dry container
40RF reeferLower than 40HQ dry container

For example, if your shipment is 58 CBM, it may fit a 40GP depending on carton size and loading method. If it is 66 CBM, a 40HQ may be more suitable.

For refrigerated cargo, do not load based only on maximum CBM. Reefer containers need airflow space, so fresh produce such as carrots, potatoes, onions and fruit may require a more conservative loading plan.

CBM vs Weight

CBM measures volume, but container shipping also has weight limits. A shipment may fit by volume but exceed the allowed weight. This is common with heavy cargo such as metal products, stone, liquids or agricultural products packed densely.

For ocean freight, always check both total CBM and gross weight.

For air freight, CBM is used to calculate volumetric weight. Airlines usually charge based on the higher number between actual weight and volumetric weight. If your shipment is light but bulky, chargeable weight may be much higher than real weight.

How CBM Affects Freight Cost

For LCL shipping, freight is often charged by CBM or by revenue ton. A larger CBM usually means a higher freight cost.

For FCL shipping, such as a full 20GP or 40HQ container, CBM helps you decide which container type is needed. If you choose a container that is too large, you may waste space. If you choose one that is too small, cargo may not fit and you may need a second shipment.

This is why importers should calculate CBM before requesting a freight quote.

Practical CBM Checklist Before Requesting a Quote

Before asking a freight forwarder for a shipping quote, prepare these details:

  • Origin city or port
  • Destination city or port
  • Carton dimensions
  • Number of cartons
  • Gross weight
  • Pallet size, if palletized
  • Cargo name
  • Container type or LCL requirement
  • Cargo-ready date
  • Incoterm, such as FOB, CFR, CIF, DAP or DDP

With these details, the freight quote will be faster and more accurate.

FAQ

What does CBM mean in shipping?

CBM means cubic meter. It is a volume measurement used to estimate how much space cargo occupies in shipping.

How do I calculate CBM for a carton?

Multiply length, width and height. If dimensions are in centimeters, multiply length x width x height x quantity and divide by 1,000,000.

Is CBM the same as weight?

No. CBM measures volume, while weight measures how heavy the cargo is. For shipping, both volume and weight matter.

How many CBM fit in a 40HQ container?

A 40HQ container usually has around 65 to 68 CBM of practical usable capacity, depending on cargo type and loading method.

Why is CBM important for freight quotes?

CBM helps freight forwarders estimate space, container type and cost. Accurate CBM makes freight quotes faster and more reliable.
