A pallet calculator helps importers, exporters, warehouses and freight forwarders estimate how many cartons can fit on a pallet and how much space the palletized cargo will need for shipping.
This is useful before requesting a freight quote because pallet dimensions affect CBM, container loading, warehouse handling and total shipping cost. If the pallet plan is wrong, the cargo may not fit the container or the freight estimate may be too low.
You can use the FreightCostCalc Pallet Calculator to plan palletized shipments faster, especially when you need to compare carton size, pallet height, total CBM and container loading.
What Does a Pallet Calculator Calculate?
A shipping pallet calculator usually estimates:
- Cartons per layer
- Number of layers per pallet
- Total cartons per pallet
- Palletized cargo height
- Pallet CBM
- Total shipment CBM
- Approximate number of pallets needed
- Whether the cargo may fit a 20GP, 40GP or 40HQ container
Basic Pallet Calculator Formula
The simple logic is:
Cartons per layer = Pallet floor area divided by carton footprint
Total cartons per pallet = Cartons per layer x Number of layers
Pallet CBM = Pallet length x Pallet width x Loaded pallet height
For example, if one pallet can hold 10 cartons per layer and you stack 5 layers, the result is 50 cartons per pallet. If the loaded pallet size is 1.20 m x 1.00 m x 1.50 m, the pallet volume is 1.80 CBM. For 20 pallets, the total volume is 36 CBM.
How to Calculate Cartons per Pallet
To calculate cartons per pallet, you need pallet length, pallet width, carton length, carton width, maximum loaded pallet height, carton height and safe stacking layers.
The easiest method is to calculate how many cartons fit on one layer, then multiply by the number of layers. Carton orientation matters. Sometimes rotating cartons can improve pallet loading, so a good pallet plan checks both orientations.
Pallet Size and Container Loading
Common pallet sizes include:
| Pallet Type | Common Size |
|---|---|
| Standard pallet | 1200 x 1000 mm |
| Euro pallet | 1200 x 800 mm |
| North American pallet | 48 x 40 in |
The number of pallets that fit in a container depends on pallet size, loading method and whether pallets can be stacked.
| Container Type | Typical Pallet Planning Use |
|---|---|
| 20GP | Smaller shipment or heavy cargo |
| 40GP | Larger palletized shipment |
| 40HQ | More height for light or bulky cargo |
| 40RF reefer | Cold-chain cargo with airflow limits |
For refrigerated cargo, pallet loading should leave space for airflow. Do not plan reefer loading only by maximum CBM.
Palletized Cargo vs Loose Cartons
Loose cartons may allow more cartons inside a container, but palletized cargo is easier to handle, count and unload. Palletized cargo is often better for warehouse delivery, supermarket distribution, food products, fragile cartons, fast unloading and buyers who require forklift handling.
How Pallets Affect Freight Cost
Pallets can increase total shipment volume because pallet wood and unused space add extra CBM. This can affect LCL freight cost and container utilization.
For FCL shipments, pallets may reduce the number of cartons per container. For LCL shipments, palletized cargo may increase chargeable volume. That is why you should calculate both loose carton CBM and palletized CBM before confirming a quote.

FAQ
What is a pallet calculator?
A pallet calculator estimates how many cartons can fit on a pallet and how much palletized cargo volume is needed for shipping.
How do I calculate cartons per pallet?
Calculate cartons per layer first, then multiply by the number of stackable layers. You also need to check maximum pallet height and carton strength.
Do pallets increase shipping cost?
Sometimes yes. Pallets can increase CBM and reduce container loading quantity, especially for LCL shipping or bulky cargo.
Is palletized cargo better than loose cartons?
It depends on the buyer and shipment type. Palletized cargo is easier to handle, but loose cartons may fit more quantity in a container.
Should I calculate CBM before or after palletizing?
Calculate both. Loose carton CBM shows product volume, while palletized CBM shows the actual shipping volume after loading on pallets.
