Container Loading Calculator
Estimate whether your cargo can fit into a 20ft, 40ft or 40HQ container by checking CBM, weight and carton or pallet quantity.
Basic Container Capacity
20GP: about 28 CBM usable capacity
40GP: about 58 CBM usable capacity
40HQ: about 68 CBM usable capacity
40RF: lower usable capacity because refrigerated containers have thicker walls and airflow space requirements
Formula
Total CBM = length x width x height x quantity
Container utilization = total CBM / usable container CBM
Example
If your shipment is 42 CBM, it may fit in a 40GP or 40HQ container, but it will not fit in a normal 20GP container by volume. You must also check total weight, carton strength, pallet height and loading pattern.
Important Loading Notes
A container may be full by volume before it reaches the weight limit. Heavy cargo may reach the weight limit before filling the container. Fresh produce, reefer cargo and palletized cargo need extra space for airflow and safe handling.
